Bambu Indah
rustic luxury in the gardens of a tropical highland farm
Enter this magical realm and let yourself be transported to a time when life was closer to the earth.
World-renowned jewelry designer John Hardy and his wife Cynthia have created an intimate retreat in the organic gardens next to their celebrated house in Bali perched high above the Ayung river valley.
Four little antique houses from Java built of teak timbers—formerly the houses of Javanese noblemen—gaze out to a spectacular rural view of faraway rice fields, temples, and mountains. Each house is discreetly fitted with air-conditioning and furnished with antiques and luxury accessories designed and collected by John Hardy.
The houses are AFRIKA, PADI, KUNING, and KUNO, each one is different, with its original carved panels and unique character lovingly preserved.

The houses stand in fields of heritage Bali rice, shaded by fruit trees and coconut palms.
A long free-form swimming pool lined with stones snakes its way through rice fields between the houses.
At the heart of the retreat is the remarkable Minang House, inspired by the traditional boat-shaped houses of West Sumatra, and built entirely of the rare Giant Black Bamboo. Cynthia says, “This is John’s dream, his masterpiece.” He guests can gather to relax, read, do yoga, or see private cultural performances.
A little warung restaurant serves home-cooked meals, much of it from the organic food raised on the property.
Another Javanese house contains a fully equipped massage studio.
