The Green Family
As the years have gone by our family has grown and founded a number of businesses and initiatives. Here is what we are up to today.
The Story Behind
Bambu Indah
Bambu Indah is a radically distinctive boutique hotel in Ubud, carefully curated by designers and long term residents of Bali, John and Cynthia Hardy. In 2005, eleven antique Javanese bridal homes were brought to Bali, restored, and decorated with the finest details. Since then, we have expanded the property to the riverside, where we are pioneering a sustainable future with innovative, bespoke and luxurious bamboo structures for a truly one a kind experience. Now, Bambu Indah is available to travelers from around the world seeking unique experiences while being comforted by the luxury of a natural environment and service of an intimate hotel.

River Bend House, a two bedroom masterpiece that bends just like the river does, see it through the eyes of a family.
We believe in living light on the land, and that nature is our greatest asset. Antique Javanese bridal homes are elevated between rice paddies and organic garden beds. Soaring open air bamboo structures give you the best of sustainable innovation and groundbreaking design.
All of our rooms are equipped with air conditioning and fans, but in a way you may have never experienced. In order to minimize our carbon impact we have invented the air conditioned bed, where the mosquito net surrounding you captures the cool air.
Our pool water is filtered from a well into a mini river of volcanic rock that travels from the well around the Minang house finally filling the pool.
Food scraps feed the pigs, and fuel the our compost heap where the chickens pick for bugs and worms while aerating the soil. The compost then feeds the garden beds that feed you. We have a no plastic policy and instead use banana leaves as plates and papaya stems as straws. Any pesky plastics, cans, or glass bottles that do end up on the property are fed through the Cooking oil fuels the Choblong lamps that light your path in the dark of night. We could go on, trust us, but why don’t you come and find out yourself?
At Bambu Indah’s birth we dug a well nearby fed by natural underground water reserves, that we filter through a reverse osmosis system. The water is filtered again and recycled through our freshwater pool.
You won’t find a flourescent bulb in sight, as we hope to transport you back to a simpler time with candlelight and stars. Bambu indah uses LEDs and oil lamps to light your way.
Fresh water is precious, we will change your sheets upon request or on the 3rd day of your stay. Hang your towels to help them dry or leave your towels on the floor if you for them to be washed.
We monitor and minimize mosquito breeding grounds on the property which is the only sustainable preventative insect control option that is in harmony with the natural environment. We offer natural citronella insect repellent.
We provide beautiful private label Bambu Indah bath products made of 100% natural and organic ingredients, to ensure that the run off from our sinks and showers do not harm the natural environment.
Only the satay can smoke at Bambu Indah. If you must, there is a bale in the parking lot which is happy to accommodate you.
We're proud to offer a responsible lifestyle coupled with modern comforts and customized services. Here are some of the ways we preserve our environment:
It was in 1975 when John Hardy moved to Bali. He then met Cynthia, and together they set out on a mission to build a jewelry business. Upon finding success, their passions soon led them to create the sustainable masterpiece that is Bambu Indah.
The heart and soul of Bambu Indah that we are proud to call family.
